View from the 18: Week 5

Game Played June 15 2026

So far in the 2026 World Cup, we've seen some eye-opening performances from teams competing on the biggest stage for the first time. The start of our game reminded me of several WC matches we've witnessed so far, where teams that are often expected to ease into games instead came out with energy, confidence, and purpose. We did exactly that. Our passing was sharp, our movement was effective, and for long stretches we played some excellent soccer.  We showed what our team can achieve when we play confidently and support one another.

As this game went on, momentum began to shift. A few key decisions and a penalty kick changed the flow of the match, and our 2–0 lead disappeared. Every team faces moments where things don't go their way, but they are also part of the game, and the challenge is finding a way to respond. And we did.

What we shouldn't lose sight of is how well we played for significant portions of this match. We showed quality on the ball, intelligent movement off it, and a tremendous work rate throughout.

While the result wasn't what we hoped for, there are plenty of valuable lessons we can carry into next week's match.

It was a hard-fought battle from start to finish against our division leaders. We went down 1–0 late in the first half, but our team responded well after the break, showing great determination to find the equalizer. The match remained tightly contested, with both sides creating chances, but a brief defensive lapse allowed our opponents to capitalize and restore their lead at 2–1.

To our credit, we continued to push forward and never stopped fighting. We came agonizingly close to leveling the score again, with an effort that was only millimeters away from finding the back of their net, but unfortunately luck wasn’t on our side.

Despite the result, it was a strong performance against the top-of-the-table team and one that demonstrated the quality and commitment of our group.

​ A special mention goes to Dean H., who continued his excellent form by scoring once again. His goal keeps him firmly in the race for the division’s 'Golden Boot' as he continues to be a key contributor to the team's attacking success.

Game Played June 17 2026

It was more than a match—it was a war of attrition.

From the opening whistle, both sides launched into a relentless, end-to-end battle. Two determined teams traded attacks in a breathtaking display of skill and sheer willpower. Every possession mattered.  As the pressure mounted, our opponents unleashed their attacks, but they ran headlong into our unbreakable defense. Our backline stood firm, while our keeper produced remarkable saves to keep the score level.

But soccer is a game decided at the moment.

Just minutes into the second half and a brief lapse in concentration was all the opposition needed. They capitalized ruthlessly and left us staring at a daunting 2–0 deficit. For many teams, that would have been the end. Not for us.

We dug deep and fought our way back into the contest. A clinical finish by Dillon W. buried the ball in the back of their net, cutting the deficit to 2–1 and igniting belief throughout the team. Momentum shifted. What followed was an all-out assault. In the closing stages, we pressed relentlessly, pouring every ounce of energy into one final push.

But destiny had other plans, and that elusive second goal didn't materialize; the referee's whistle pierced the air. Time had run out.

We may have fallen short, but I'm incredibly proud of the grit and fight we showed today.

Game Played June 19 2026

For this week's game, our team made the drive all the way out to Cornwall for a game against the Seaway Valley Blazers. Big shout out to Kelvin Osborn & Chris Schultz who each carpooled 4 players to our match. Thankfully, as we arrived at the field the rain subsided and there were no signs of any lightning. We were very grateful for that after driving for 90 minutes.

Despite the long drive and zero subs to start, our team started strongly by holding onto the ball well and getting it deep into the attacking half. Unfortunately, the early pressure did not lead to a goal as the final ball was lacking. It was Seaway who struck on their first attempt on goal. A cross to the back post found their striker wide open for an easy tap in. Our Wolves pushed for an equalizer right away and were rewarded with a penalty when a deflected shot off the goalkeeper hit the outstretched arm of the defender. Our Hakan Mustafa stepped up and uncharacteristically put the ball over the bar. It was probably his 1st miss in his last 20 attempts. Not to be deterred, we found the equalizer when a dangerous cross was misdirected by the Seaway defender right to Jeff Dennis who had made a run from his defensive position. He found the bottom left corner before the keeper could get back into position, and it was 1-1. The lead was short lived as Seaway caught Westboro on the counter after a free kick was cleared and found Seaway's speedy striker. He got in behind the defense and finished it off for the lead.

Our Wolves went into the half a little unlucky to be down 2-1. A better half was needed in order to get a result. For the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, our Wolves continued to push while Seaway held strong and looked to counter. Seaway's defensive resolve paid off as they were able to get their 3rd and 4th goals of the game. With just a little over 15 minutes to go our team decided to move to a 3-5-2 formation. The extra attacker proved to be the right move as Seaway had a much tougher time defending against our extra attacker. Westboro were rewarded with their 2nd goal of the game as Hakan Mustafa found Zeyad Kassis who calmly found the back of the net. About 5 minutes later. Then our Wolves were awarded another penalty after a nice flick on from Kelvin Osborn found Jeff Dennis' run into the box only for him to be taken down from behind as the Seaway defender was unable to get a foot on the ball. Hakan stepped up again and this time he found the back of the net to make it 4-3. With 10 minutes to go, and all the momentum going our way, it looked likely that an equalizer was coming. The Seaway Valley keeper kept his team in the lead, making several excellent saves. One in particular looked destined for the top right corner off the foot of Ivan Sambles. Unfortunately, their keeper hurt himself on that play and had to be replaced. Our equalizer never came through, and Seaway were able to pot 2 more late goals as our team was throwing bodies forward and leaving the backline exposed.

Our 'Man of the Match' was Kelvin Osborn. He was solid playing right back. Didn't allow any attacker in behind him and cleared the ball every time it came to him. He even moved to playing forward when we switched to 3-5-2, and he did an excellent job holding the ball up and making simple passes that kept the attack alive.

Game Played June 19 2026

The weather elements were entirely against us this week as we hosted Kemptville on a relentlessly rainy day. The slick pitch and waterlogged ball made control an absolute nightmare, forcing us to favour sheer grit over our usual fluid passing game. While the conditions threatened to derail our rhythm, the squad dug deep, proving that a true championship mentality shines brightest when the weather is at its worst.

The match didn't start as planned, with Kemptville striking first to take an early lead. However, going down a goal only ignited a fire within the team. Instead of panicking, our Wolves fought back with relentless pressure to counter the tide, ultimately securing a convincing 6–3 victory. It was a true bookend performance; they may have scored first, but we absolutely earned the right to score last.

Game Played June 19 2026

Our OT5 Wolves team played against Ottawa Hellenic on their home field. Despite the rain and the thunderstorm warning, the game proceeded as planned. As a new team, we are still learning to play together. As the season advances, we are starting to see an improvement across all lines.

This was a hard-fought match with scoring chances for both teams. The game in a victory for Ottawa Hellenic. We trust the process and the results will come.

Our next game will be against the Ottawa Bears Oranje.  ¡Vamos!

Game Played June 21 2026

Our Westboro Wolves Homa FC MC4 secured an important victory over Ottawa City SC White MC4 in a competitive match played under favourable weather conditions.

Happy Father’s Day to all our Wolves fathers and father figures, past and present.
