2026 Week 1

View from the 18: Week 1

11 min read 10 matches

We begin our 2026 season— one that really reflects the continued growth of our club; we're now at 12 teams.

This year is special for us. We’re launching our first Men’s Competitive team, our first Women’s team, and we're proud to have our returning teams back plus introducing two new squads made up of children of some of our adult players plus many new recruits.

Our Wolf Pack will be playing in the following divisions ... MC4, MR2, MR3 (2 teams), MR4, MR5, OT2, OT4, OT5, OT6, MOT3, all from the Ottawa-Carleton Soccer League. Plus, our women's Wolves Yellow Cards Tournament team.

It’s incredible to see this all come together, and it truly speaks to what we've always believed—that we're not just a club; we are a family.

The captains' arm bands are ready to be worn with pride! We will continue working collaboratively with our League and our managers to encourage our players to compete with integrity, treat others with respect, and represent our group in the best possible way.

Thank you, everyone for your continued support.

WOLVES MR4 - Character. Come back. First Win!

Game Played: May 19-26

It wasn't the perfect start, but the perfect response.

In our first official game together, we showed real character after conceding early and never stopped believing we could turn it around. A composed finish from Olami A. brought us level before Chris A. found the winner to complete the comeback.

The final 20 minutes tested us, but the boys stood strong to secure our first win of the season.

A huge team performance and only the beginning for the Wolves.

WOLVES MR5 - Clawing Back: Team Rallies to Draw Level!

Author
By KILEY M. Team Manager

Game Played: May 20-26

Our Westboro Wolves MR5 opened their season with a dramatic 5-5 draw against the Ottawa Bears in a match that had just about everything: goals, momentum swings, defensive grit, and a late equalizer worthy of the occasion.

The first half was a tight affair, with both sides battling for control early. Scotty M. was a constant threat going forward, creating several dangerous chances and keeping the Bears’ back line under pressure. The Bears managed to capitalize on a few opportunities of their own, however, and despite the Wolves showing flashes of quality in possession, they found themselves chasing the game.

At one stage the Wolves trailed 4-2, but the second half showed the character and resilience of our side. Westboro settled into the game, moved the ball with more confidence, and gradually clawed their way back. The pressure paid off as the Wolves fought back to level things at 4-4, refusing to let the match slip away.

A defensive lapse allowed the Bears to edge back in front at 5-4, but the Wolves responded immediately in spectacular fashion. Matt S. burst down the wing on a brilliant run before delivering a dangerous cross to the back post. Timing his movement perfectly, Manny launched himself through the air “like a young salmon,” meeting the ball with a diving header that buried into the net to make it 5-5 and cap off a thrilling contest.

While there are defensive details to clean up, our Wolves will take plenty of positives from the opener — attacking intent, resilience under pressure, and the ability to battle back multiple times against a tough Ottawa Bears side. If this match was any indication, the season ahead should be an entertaining one.

WOLVES MR3 - Plenty of Positives to Build On!

Author
By JAHEEL B. Team Manager

Game Played: May 20-26

This game truly was a tale of two halves for our Wolves MR3. Our team came out flying and looked in complete control early, building a strong 2-0 lead with energy, confidence, and relentless pressure. Momentum was firmly on our side, and it felt like we were on our way to a statement win.

But credit to our opponents, who refused to back down. They slowly clawed their way back into the match and capitalized on their chances, scoring three unanswered goals to turn the game on its head and secure the victory.

A tough result to swallow after such a dominant start, but there were still plenty of positives to build on from the opening half. Our Wolves showed what they’re capable of — now it’s about finding that consistency for a full 90 minutes.

Game Played: May 20-26

In our first game of this season, our team played with an incredible heart. After a shaky first half, everyone dug deep, found their chemistry, and delivered an outstanding second half that exemplified exactly what this group is capable of when playing together.

The final score may not have gone our way, but the effort, resilience, and character on display are something we are proud of.

WOLVES OT2 - Return of the Wolves!

Author
By JEFF D. Team Manager

Game Played: May 22-26

After folding right before the 2025 season our Wolves have returned. With only 3 returning players (Jeff Dennis, Peter Akpan & Eamon Kavanagh) the team opted to re-enter the league at OT2 as many of the players had not previously played with each other. With both strikers and both GK's not available for the match, our Wolves were forced to get creative with their lineup. CB Rob Carvalho played in goal (which shifted Erhan Asliturk to CB) and  CM's Jonathan Fitzsimon, Jeff Dennis Hakan Mustafa took turns playing forward.
The Wolves opponents for the game were Ottawa City SC who finished 9th out of 14 teams in the combined OT1/2 division the previous season. There were a lot of new faces in the Ottawa City lineup this year, and they were definitely an improved and younger team this year.
Despite this being the 1st competitive game for our new group and the shifting of players in the lineup, it was our Wolves that came out the stronger side. For the first 15 minutes of the game, Ottawa City struggled to get the ball past half. Our Wolves' strong play was rewarded when Scott Lamarche sent a dangerous cross towards Peter Akpan just inside the box. Peter was unable to get to the ball first but thankfully the Ottawa City defender headed into his own net. 1-0 Wolves. This seemed to wake Ottawa City up as their play immediately improved after conceding first. They moved the ball around a lot better and put our team defense to the test over and over again with balls played just behind the defensive line. Ottawa City finally capitalized after a misplaced clearance came off the post directly in front of the Ottawa City forward who tapped it into the open net. Shortly before half time against the run of play, our Wolves were able to restore the lead when Hakan Mustafa scored off a free kick just outside of the box.
The 2nd half saw more pressure from Ottawa City. The Wolves were unable to get any kind of sustained attack against them and eventually conceded when the Ottawa City forward was able to get in behind the Wolves defense and make it 2-2. It was clear that the Wolves were struggling a bit with players playing out of position and also not having  familiarity with each other. Despite that, our Wolves did come close on several occasions but could not take the lead back. Thankfully for the Wolves, Ottawa City were also unable to get a 3rd goal despite having more of the ball in the 2nd half. Overall, a 2-2 draw against a much-improved Ottawa City side was not a bad result for the new look Wolves.

WOLVES OT4 ALBANIA - Fall Short but Fight to the End!

Author
By Q.V. Team Manager

Game Played: May 22-26

The first game of the season was slow-paced, but as the game heated up, the opponents scored a penalty, taking the lead. They added another goal, putting Albania on the back foot. The first half ended with a 2-0 deficit. The team regrouped and fought back, scoring the first goal. Albania fought back hard to close the gap, but the opponents were saved by the bell. The final whistle cut the comeback short, cementing a narrow 2-1 defeat for Albania.

WOLVES OT5 - Injuries Took their Toll!

Author
By JAMIE H. Team Manager

Game Played: May 22-26

Our Wolves OT5 opened the season against the defending OT6 champions and battled to a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate through the first half. Injuries began to take their toll as the game wore on, leaving us vulnerable late, but the effort and determination from the squad never waned. We also created several strong scoring chances that could have completely changed the outcome. Plenty of inspired play to build on — we’ll recover, regroup, and come back stronger for the next match.

WOLVES OT6 - Smiles, Hot dogs, and Frozen fingers!

Author
By KEVIN B. BLOG contributor and Team Player

Game Played: May 22-26

Under the lights at Richmond Lion’s Park Field 1, our Westboro Wolves OT6 opened the season with a hard-fought and highly physical 3-1 win over Korean OT6 on a crisp night where the grass was long enough to qualify as farmland.
The Koreans arrived looking like they were about to play a World Cup Qualifier, complete with a full coaching staff and an intimidating warmup routine. Unfortunately for them, the Wolves were too busy trying to figure out which shin pad went on which shin to notice and once the whistle blew, the Wolves took over physically and never looked back.
Liam S. opened the scoring with silky moves that completely fooled the Korean keeper before calmly finishing into a wide-open net. Not long after, “The Great” Ken G. stepped up to the penalty spot after Liam earned a PK and coolly passed the ball into the corner of the net like a man paying a parking ticket. Gingerman also launched a shot so high over the net that local air traffic control is still tracking it — the long grass clearly to blame, not a complete lack of skill and composure.
After the Koreans clawed within a goal in the second half, Rookie Timon G. announced himself in style, powering home a beautiful header off a perfect cross from Smithies to put the game away.
At the other end, Francis B. was fearless in goal, charging into every Korean attack and challenging every ball sent into the box like it personally offended him.
The new Wolves players all fit in seamlessly with the vets. Peter S. made roughly two dozen dangerous runs into the Korean penalty area. Sadly, his famous golden left boot never quite got the shot away — although Korean defenders may wake up in cold sweats from seeing him charging at them.
After the final whistle, Dr. Jay delivered the post-game BBQ; Jonesy handled hydration duties like a seasoned professional, and the Wolves celebrated a strong first game of the season with smiles, hot dogs, and frozen fingers.

Game Played: May 22-26

There’s no better feeling than stepping onto the pitch for an outdoor soccer game on a beautiful late spring evening — the kind of night that reminds everyone why we are passionate about this sport.
Our 2026 campaign kicked off in style, and it didn’t take long for our breakthrough moment to arrive. Alonso G. delivered a brilliant strike that electrified the sideline and ultimately stood as the game winner. A composed finish, a huge moment, and the perfect way to start the season.
There were tired legs everywhere by the final whistle, and more than a few players were running purely on determination and adrenaline. A 'shout-out for the shut-out' by our keeper, Rocky C.!
And after the hard work came the reward. The team gathered, post-game, for a well-earned BBQ and beverages, generously provided by Matthew C. and Rob S.
It was the perfect ending to a memorable evening and that unmistakable feeling of satisfaction that comes after earning a hard-fought win with your teammates.
One game down, a strong start to 2026, and plenty more nights like this ahead.

The start of our season was uneven, and there were moments that tested us early. But what stands out most is the character of our teams. Time and again, they responded to slow starts with composure and determination. They competed harder, trusted each other, and found ways to battle back.

The results may not always come easily, but the commitment, heart, and belief our teams continue to show are something everyone in our Club can be proud of.
